Does an ignition interlock device affect insurance rates?

It very likely will impact your auto insurance but the if it does will depend on the answer to this question:

Do you need an ignition interlock device because of a judge mandate or are you getting an ignition interlock device voluntarily for other reasons?

If you need an ignition interlock device because of a judge mandate from an OWI conviction you most likely need SR-22 insurance in Wisconsin. This type of insurance is high risk insurance. Naturally, it’s more expensive because of the greater risk you pose to insurance companies and a separate fee that’s charged. The Draeger Interlock doesn’t affect these rates, it’s the requirement of SR-22 insurance that affects your insurance rates.

Now if you want an ignition interlock device installed on a volunteer basis then it’s different. You won’t need SR-22 insurance because it’s not required by the state. You could save money if you reach out to your insurance company to see if they will lower your rates when our device is installed. Since they might view it as lowering their risk.
