Does an ignition interlock device require you to stop drinking?

Each state has different settings but in Wisconsin Ignition Interlock devices are set to allow anything below a .02 BrAC. That’s not much and for many it can easily be gone over on any drink containing alcohol. Whether or not the drink(s) you’re having will put you over .02 BrAC depends on several factors.

Such as:

  • Weight
  • Age
  • Empty or full stomach
  • Medications
  • Liver Disease
  • Binge Drinking (drinking a large amount all at once)

With IIDs set so low it’s quite easy for people to consume too much alcohol the night or morning of and fail a test. Or just simply not know their bodies close enough to be accurate on whether you will fail or pass. Our suggestion is to always not risk it, if you’re going to be drinking do not try to push the boundaries. Arrange for a ride or have a designated driver. Also, if you fail a test always make sure you give adequate time before trying to pass another test for the alcohol to clear from your system.

In conclusion it’s complicated, do you need to stop drinking altogether? It’s likely a good idea when you plan to use your vehicle with an IID installed in it. However, is it necessary to do such? That depends on the factors above.
